Niacinamide sits second in the ingredient list at 10%, the concentration where the published research on sebum and pore appearance actually sits. 0.2% salicylic acid is oil-soluble, so it works inside the pore lining rather than just on the surface. And the encapsulated retinol is dosed low and released gradually — smoothing texture over time without the peeling that puts people off retinoids.

Supporting them: honokiol from magnolia bark, cynanchum atratum, centella asiatica, copper tripeptide-1, plant-derived extracellular vesicles from ginseng root and centella callus, and a barrier set of cholesterol, phytosterols and ceramide-type lipids to keep it comfortable.

How to use

At night, after cleansing and toner, apply 2–3 drops to dry skin and follow with moisturizer.

Build up gradually: 2 nights the first week, 3 the second, every other night from there, and nightly once your skin is comfortable. Wear sunscreen every morning.

Best for

Visible pores, congestion, uneven texture and oily or combination skin. A good first retinoid, since the dose is low and the formula is built to stay tolerable. Give it 12 weeks.

Good to know

• This serum contains retinol. Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• It already contains both a retinoid and an exfoliating acid — do not layer it with another retinoid, an exfoliating toner pad or an acid serum on the same night.
• Contains salicylic acid. Avoid if you have a salicylate or aspirin allergy.
• Patch test before first use. Avoid the immediate eye area. External use only.
